“Warsaw’s Old Town”

It is good to begin with the Warsaw’s Old Town. This oldest part of Warsaw was established in 13th century. It is surrounded by the city walls and the Barbican, reconstructed to their medieval shapes after the World War II.

The Old Town Market Place is the heart of the area. It is interesting to look at the old pictures from different periods of the Old Town existence. The most impressive is to see the photos from 1945 (photo 1) and compare it with nowadays form (photo 2). It can enable us to imagine the magnitude of destruction after the World War II.

In the Old Town there are many different churches to see. There is Kamienne Schodki street leading down to the Vistula river (photo 3). We can also relax for a while on a bench with a view on the Vistula river.

In the area of the Old Town we have to see the Castle Square and the Royal Castle (photo 4). Next to castle there is the Sigismund’s Columne, one of the oldest monuments in Northern Europe erected in 1644.

In front of the Castle Square there is a tourist information where we can take a useful map of Warsaw.

“Krakowskie Przedmieście”

From the Old Town until the Wilanów Palace leads the Royal Route (photo 5). Starting from the Royal Castle until the Royal Baths Park it is a great tour to take.

On our way we will see old churches, campus of the University of Warsaw, palaces and the two oldest hotels in the capital (photos 6 and 7) . The street was completely renovated in 2008.

“Nowy Świat”

Nowy Świat street (photo 8) is the immediate southward extension of Krakowskie Przedmieście street. Always full of life, with lots of restaurants, coffee places and shops, Nowy Świat street is a heart of the New Town and a representative area of the city.

“Plac Trzech Krzyży”

The Three Crosses Square links Nowy Świat street to the north and Aleje Ujazdowskie to the south. In the Square there is the neoclassist St. Alexander’s Church (photo 9).

“Aleje Ujazdowskie”

Aleje Ujazdowskie leads us to the Royal Baths Park. While walking through the avenue we can see many notable historical buildings, villas and palaces. There is also a lot of embassy’s on our way to the park.

“Łazienki Królewskie”

The Royal Baths Park is the largest park in Warsaw, which occupies76 hectares of the city center. The park was designed in 17th century. It has many different attractions on its area.

There is a Chopin Statue next to which we can listen on Sundays during summer classic concerts (photo 10).

Area next to the Palace on the Water (photo 11) and the Roman Theater (photo 12) is perfect for a moment of contemplation. We can borrow a rowing boat and navigate for a while on a pond.

Moreover, we can see the Old and New Orangery, Belweder Palace, White House, Myśliwiecki Palace and Egyptian Temple.

“ Taste of communist architecture”

It is interesting to change a bit architectural style and come back through Plac Zbawiciela and Plac Konstytucji.

Plac Zbawiciela is a charming place with very popular clubs and restaurants.

On Plac Konstytucji it is finally possible to catch a glimpse of socrealist urban project (photo 13). Next to the Palace of Culture and Science it was the main socrealist investment between 1946-1956. On the buildings there are typical for the 1950s period, sculptures of socialist workers.

“Pałac Kultury i Nauki”

Palace of the Culture and Science (photo 14) has been for many years the most controversial building in Warsaw. Erected in 1955, was the gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Poland. It is the tallest building in Warsaw. In the building we can find cinema, swimming pool, coffee places, exhibitions, theater and clubs. On the 30th floor there is a terrace with a panoramic view of the city. For some of Warsaw citizens it is a symbol of Stalin domination. However, for younger generations it is a symbol of the capital city, recognizable for everyone.

"The Warsaw Uprising Museum"

The exhibition depicts history of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Museum is well prepared for foreign visitors. Audio guides are available in many languages. It is even more attractive as vaious audiovisual and multimedia communications techniques have been applied.

In the museum we have a possibility to watch a movie “City of ruins” that demonstrates the enormity of the destruction of Warsaw in 1945.

"Praga"

For a long time a forgotten place of Warsaw, for last few years Praga has been rediscovered. Ząbkowska street tempts us with bars, galleries and restored buildings from the end of 19th century (photo 15).

On the other hand Saska Kępa is a place where the artists and the intelligentsia found their home. Skaryszewski Park considered as a one of the most beautiful in Warsaw and Francuska street with many magical places can make us fall in love with the left side of the river borough.
